...Maybe you thought shows about secret agents were all fiction. OK, most of them are, but Get Smart's Don Adams has the military career to back up his fictional character. A World War II Marine veteran, Adams served at Guadalcanal and battled life-threatening Blackwater Fever.
After the war, he became a successful artist, but his friends and family were more enthralled with his impressions and mimicry skills, and he soon began a comedy act. In 1954 he auditioned for Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts and was "discovered." He performed in nightclubs and on variety shows including The Perry Como Show. He even voiced cartoon characters, and then appeared as a detective on The Bill Dana Show.
From there he developed his Agent Maxwell Smart character and starred in Get Smart, the hit TV sitcom that ran from 1965 to 1970. Adams went on to star in series like The Partners and made frequent appearances on The Love Boat. During the 1980s and '90s he again found success as a secret agent character, voicing the title role in the hit cartoon series Inspector Gadget.
I sent Don Adams an 8x10 color photo, which he kindly signed.
